Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

With remote working becoming a normality for most businesses in 2020, MFA should be on your companies to-do list.

With remote working becoming a normality for most businesses in 2020, MFA should be on your companies to-do list.

What is MFA?

Multi-factor Authentication is the process of manually authenticating the access to an online profile, this is commonly done by signing into an account and approving the sign in on your phone. Businesses should be adopting the MFA solution especially if they are consuming Microsoft services.

Why do I need MFA?

The answer, passwords are failing users all over the world especially when passwords consist of common words or phrases. The biggest threat to users are brute force attacks that are being performed with dedicated hardware, especially with the CPU power having grown exponentially in the past decade certain devices can now provide more than half a million passwords per second and rainbow tables can be used to crack14-character alphanumeric passwords in about 160 seconds.

Are there different types of authentication methods?

There are three main types of authentication that you can use:

  1. Things you know (Knowledge) such as password or pin.
  2. Things you have (Possession) such as a badge or smartphone.
  3. Things you are (Inherence) such as voice recognition, iris scanners or fingerprint.

How can I setup MFA?

If you are part of business, you should ask your IT manager to reach out to your IT support provider and ask them to initiate a roll out plan for MFA so that you can keep the business safe.

If you don't have an IT support provider you can reach out to us and we can help.
